Top 15 Films of 2010
Took me a lot of time to finalize this and see all the movies necessary and no it was not a mistake to not include True Grit.
1. Black Swan- I’ve always been an Aronofsky guy but his most recent exploration into the rarely explored theme of perfection as a destroyer was his best film yet. Over the top symbolism to go along with subtle characterization made this a triumph. I rank it this high because two days after watching it I was still left paranoid and uneven. Absolute masterpiece.
2. Social Network- No explanation really needed. Fincher, Eisenberg, Reznor/Ross just doing what they do best: making a new cinematic classic.
3. Blue Valentine- Thinking about this movie even makes me tear up. Most accurate representation of a relationship and subsequent breakup ever filmed. Suicidally depressing driven by some of they years strongest performances. You witness Gosling and Williams play two separate characters, pre-marriage and post-marriage. Plus, the script was the years best.
4. The Fighter- DJ Marky Mark strikes back in his and Bale’s best performance’s yet. I will be appalled if Bale does not take home a little gold man for this one. all actng aside, the direction in this movie was reminiscent of a young Scorsese (especially with the use of “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.”)
5. Inception- Just rewatched to verify that I wasn’t just breathing hype by placing it this high up. Sure, it’s not the mind fuck everyone advertised it as but still one of the years smartest films to hit the mainstream. Oh and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
6. Toy Story 3- This movie made people cry. It’s good. Kbai
7. Exit Through The Gift Shop- Banksy made a stellar film that serves as a commentary on art and those that “appreciate” it. I think it’s all fake but the possibility of truth just adds to its mystique.
8. Shutter Island- I’m a Scorsese guy and really appreciate how frequently he pops out movies. Leo deserves recondition for his performance but the damn Academy seems to forget about movie that come out early in the year.
9. The King’s Speech- F-f-f-f-f-f-fan-fanfuc-fanfuck-fanfucking-t-t-t-tastic.
10. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World- Started a new genre: Comic Book/Video Games/ RocknRoll/ Romantic Comedy
11. 127 Hours- FRANCOOOOOOOO!
12. The Other Guys- Hardest I’ve laughed in a film all year. Adam McKay releases his most subtle movie yet. Perfect satire on buddy cop films.
13. Kick-Ass- This is how the next Spiderman movie should be made: bright colours, over the top characters, and an abundance of Nick Cage.
14. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- The dancing scene looked as if it could have been taken from an art house film. Really enjoyed the Hallows animation scene too. David Yates is taking all the right risks while staying loyal to the source material.
15. The Town- Ben Affleck going back to his roots and making a Boston centric film. Probably the only film on this list that I would give under a 10/10 rating but I guess 15 was just a good number to stop at.
Movies I should have seen but didn’t: Winter’s Bone, Catfish
Biggest Disappointments of 2010: Alice in Wonder Land, The Kids Are All Right, Easy A
